Capricorn New Moon

In Vedic Astrology Capricorn (Makara) is symbolized as a crocodile or sea-creature. Makara teaches a rare duality of fierce survival intelligence and devoted care. A crocodile is a skilled hunter, yet a tender mother, carrying her young delicately. The crocodile is swift in water and sturdy on land, showing the need for adaptability between work productivity and the emotional needs of family.

We benefit from the lessons of Capricorn, by building strength without losing softness and remembering kindness as we pursue our ambitions.

Capricorn is the natural 10th house of vocation, responsibility, reputation, and service. This is where we accumulate the most amount of karma, and so intelligently, we yearn to build our work based on the principles, knowledge and ethics that align with our heart.

When we forget what inspires us, we default to worry, concern for status and security and become miserly. With insecurity, our perspective shifts to a sense of lack and then we wonder why our work feels dry. We can transform this dryness by shifting one question: “What am I getting?” to “What am I giving?”

If your job pays the bills but doesn't feed your soul, find a way to bring your gifts to work each day through mentorship, service projects, teaching or building something useful for others in the workspace. We often resist this one simple shift, dreaming that there is something “better out there”, a bigger title, more money, etc. But before we make a change, it’s important to find our gifts right where we are.

As an astrologer, this is the biggest mistake I find people make - they look for their purpose outside of themselves and forget to bring their unique service to others where ever they are right now. This is like a dog chasing its tail endlessly, arriving in the same place.  This one shift from “what I get” to “what I give” will unlock the feeling of fullness you desire no matter where you go.

Capricorn’s shadow arrives when we over identify with achievement, fixate on possessions, and become rigid inside. This New Moon is a chance to reset the system, to balance the water with the earth and bring flow back to our work lives.

This powerful new Moon is taking place with an exalted Mars, who brings grounded, focused energy to the table, Mercury, who manages the details, and Venus, who ensures cooperation and collaboration.

In your annual planning, Mercury will help create timelines, priorities, routines, and simple next steps. Mars will supply the push to finish what you start as long as you keep it realistic. Pressure and overwhelm will not support your consistency. If you are type A, set a goal that includes rest and simplification. If you tend to procrastinate, borrow Capricorn’s discipline and take one decisive step at a time.

All of these planets line up in Uttara Ashada, the Nakshatra of victory. The Vishwadevas, the universal gods, reside here and bring our focus to the world. Global social changes are on the rise everywhere - in governments, economy and business. The wisdom is to engage and be a part of the world, participate fully, yet with a healthy detachment. Don’t get caught in the media's display of fear and anxiety. Instead, accept what is happening, face reality, participate at your level, yet understand that this is all part of a divine plan. Our individual awareness is only a tiny glimmer of the great consciousness. This helps us trust that we are guided to handle anything that life throws at us with grace and the ability to respond.

Meditation is your best friend when planning your year - during the new moon you can open to potent guidance for your year if you go inwards. Saturn, Capricorn’s ruler, teaches mastery through stillness. Sit in solitude. Lengthen your spine. Slow your breath. Give yourself a clean container of time, even 12 minutes, alone without a screen. When the mind settles, the true path unfolds. From that place, your goals become simpler, and your next steps become obvious.
