New Moon in Libra ✨ Diwali 🪔✨Nov 1st 2014

The new moon in Libra is a celebration called Diwali, the festival of light.

Indian festivals are intentionally celebrated because of a particular configuration between the sun, moon and earth using the astronomically precise sidereal zodiac. From our viewpoint on earth the sun (soul) and moon (mind) are in front of a back drop of stars (Libra, Swati) which reveals the theme of this present moment.

In Libra, the sun’s strength is weakened and we feel the loss of daylight hours. It is said that the sun is less bright because he is with his beloved wife in Libra. Venus rules here and shows our desire to share the pleasures of the world through relationships despite the sacrifice they require.

Libra marks the half way point in the Zodiac, where the material world ends and the immaterial begins. We notice a stirring of dissatisfaction and can either distract with more pleasure seeking or hopefully start to ask.. is there something beyond this world?

As the moon is also dark right now, we are longing for the light.

Diwali tells the story of Rama (the sun) and his wife Sita (the moon) who return from exile to their beloved kingdom. The citizens who missed them deeply, lit candles illuminating a path that would lead them home.

Notice that this story and the celebration of Ram and Sita’s return happens when the sun is at its lowest, where we tend to slump into moodiness, feeling stormy and stuck. Just like the story, the dark half of the year calls us home, to our soul, the true source of power, which is brighter than a million suns.

When we intentionally bring our focus to celebrating light together, we realize how bright the world becomes.

The restless mind gives us the urge to wander, travel, in search of new stories, new adventures. This new moon  is in the Nakshatra called Swati, ruled by Vayu, the god of the wind. Vayu can carry us to the 4 corners of the world, yet we must not let our mind scatter in all directions. The symbol of Swati is a sword, and reminds us that, in order to cut through the obstacles of life, we must find the stillness in chaos, developing a one pointed mind through the breath (wind) using pranayama.

✨🗡️✨

Blessings of love & light
